For months now, businesses from coast to coast have been fretting over a terrifying new reality: employees have leverage to demand higher wages and better conditions. The horror! Management goes on television to complain about the apocalyptic consequences of raising wages, a favorite hobby that seems to crop up every time the topic comes up at all, especially over the course of the last decade’s Fight For $15 movement. If we have to pay more, they say, we’ll end up needing to fire people. If we have to pay more, they continue, we’ll have to raise prices.
