Our enemy is not a nation, or an alliance, or a terrorist organization; instead, we’re fighting something invisible and indiscrimating, and the tools we need to combat it are neither exciting nor flashy. There’s always a bit of awe and romanticism—when thinking of wars safely in the distance of history—around Ford plants re-gearing to produce warplanes instead of consumer automobiles for four solid years. And those warplanes, with names like “Thunderbolt” and “Wildcat” were thrilling and inspiring.
